The cause is usually one of a short list: hangers that were fastened into rotten wood, a pitch that was never set correctly, ice that loaded the trough beyond what the fasteners could hold, or a downpipe that discharges too close to the foundation and backs water up under the shingle line.
We start by finding which of those it is. That means looking at the fascia behind the trough, the condition of the wood the hangers are biting into, the pitch across the whole run, and where the water actually ends up when the system is loaded. Only then do we tell you whether the run is worth repairing or whether replacing it will cost you less over the next ten years.
When repair is the right answer we reseal and remitre corners, replace failed hangers with fasteners set into solid wood, correct the pitch across the run, refit or resize downpipes, and replace damaged sections with material matched to what is already on the building.

What a small leak costs if you leave it
Water escaping behind a gutter runs down the fascia, gets in behind the soffit, and soaks the sheathing edge where nobody looks. On a cottage that sits empty for weeks at a time, that goes unnoticed for a season or two — and by then the repair is carpentry, not eavestrough. Fixing the trough while it is still a trough problem is always the cheaper job.

Often, yes. If the aluminum is sound and the problem is pitch, fastening or sealing, repair is usually the sensible choice. If the trough has been repeatedly reworked, is holed, or the fascia behind it is compromised, we will tell you plainly that replacement is the better spend.
